Leslie Bunt

"The integration of mind, body and spirit in music therapy practice and study: some thoughts and reflections"

Music therapy is increasingly being used as a resource by children and adults across different stages of the lifespan living with different health and social care needs. In this presentation Leslie Bunt will reflect how music therapy practice holds the capacity to integrate holistically mental, physical and spiritual aspects while both actively engaged in music making and listening to music. Challenges for music therapists arise from the evidence-based practice movement and the exploration of potential connections between the fields of neuroscience and psychotherapy. Where do we position ourselves within the growing music and health movement and when supporting other professionals in using music therapeutically? In our search for meaning and evidence we still need to keep the premise alive that music itself can aid, support and transform.

Leslie Bunt began his studies in music therapy in 1976 with Juliette Alvin at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London. In 1985 Leslie was awarded the first PhD in music therapy in a British University for his research with children. Leslie co-founded The MusicSpace Trust creating centres for music therapy practice, research and training. He set up the first part-time postgraduate training in music therapy at the University of Bristol in 1992 and in 2006 the course developed into a MA and moved to the University of the West of England, Bristol where Leslie is currently Professor in Music Therapy.  Leslie’s has worked with children and adults across the lifespan with wide-ranging healthcare needs. Currently his clinical practice focuses on work in adult cancer care. Leslie is a practitioner and Primary Trainer in Guided Imagery in Music.

Leslie is published widely and presents regularly at national and international conferences. His publications include Music Therapy: an art beyond words, 2nd edition co-written with Brynjulf Stige (2014) and The Handbook of Music Therapy (2002) co-edited with Sarah Hoskyns and currently being revised with Sarah Hoskyns and Sangeeta Swamy for a second edition (both published by Routledge).
